James Coutts

James joined chambers in 2009 upon successful completion of his pupillage with Owen Edwards. Before joining chambers, James worked as a Magistrates’ Court Prosecutor for Serco, the company responsible for monitoring and enforcing electronically monitored curfews.

Criminal Practice:
James covers all aspects of criminal work both prosecuting and defending in the Magistrates’ Court and the Crown Courts. He has experience of cash seizures and the associated provisions of the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002. He has a particular interest in how the criminal courts deal with young people and has delivered seminars on this topic.

Regulatory Practice:
James also has an interest in Regulatory Law matters and has been instructed in cases involving taxi licensing appeals and Environmental Law proceedings.

Civil Practice:
James is developing his civil law practice. He has experience of dealing with civil applications and hearings from small claims to fast track hearings, with a particular interest in Consumer Credit Act cases. James is also interested in all aspects of Housing Law and is regularly instructed in possession actions in relation to both public and private tenancies and applications for anti-social behaviour orders and injunctions.

James accepts instructions on a Conditional Fee basis and endeavours to provide a quick turnaround on paperwork.
